Shopping creates gigantic paper trail

You know the gigantic paper trail when you go shopping:

- Buy a couple of things.
- The cash register spits out several feet of paper.
- This several feet of paper clogs up your wallet, or purse, or whatever ... you'd get rid of it, but without that paperwork, you'd be SOL if you need to get a refund or exchange.

Anyway, this is according to Newser:
And the longer piece from the Wall Street Journal (beware of click-through ad):

Receipts for a family of four's weekly grocery haul can run to three-feet long. CVS cashiers sometimes jokingly ask customers if they would like shopping bags to tote their receipts. Many retailers' receipts are half an inch longer because of lines urging shoppers to keep their receipts ... after retiring in February, Jeannette Lovejoy of Roseville, Calif., began stuffing supermarket and other receipts into a zippered pouch in her wallet to keep closer tabs on her spending. Soon the zipper burst, ruining a wallet she had owned for a decade. "The receipt issue has gotten out of hand," Ms. Lovejoy said ...

Hey, this is real, vital stuff.
